# Search people

> Actors, directors and the whole crew by name in Russian or English.

Request: `GET https://api.kinodata.space/v1.3/persons`

Searches names in Russian and English and forgives typos: `nolan`, `нолан` and `kristofer nolan` find Christopher Nolan, `decaprio` finds Leonardo DiCaprio. Exact matches come first, then names that start with the query, then similar ones; within each, better-known people first.

Tell namesakes apart by year of birth: `birth_year=1970`, or a range: `birth_year.gte=1960&birth_year.lte=1980`.

Search leaves the biography out: it is long and a list doesn’t need it. Ask for it with `fields`: `fields=name,biography`. For type-ahead suggestions, use `limit=5`–`10`.

## Query parameters

- `q` (string, required) — A name or part of one, in Russian or English.
  Example: `q=нолан`.
- `birth_year` (integer) — Year of birth. For a range, use `birth_year.gte` and `birth_year.lte`.
  Example: `birth_year.lte=1950`.
- `fields` (csv) — Which person fields to return: `fields=name,photo_url`. With a `-` sign, which to drop. `name` keeps `name_ru` and `name_en`, `biography` keeps `biography_ru` and `biography_en`. IDs always come back.
  Default: everything but the biography. Example: `fields=name,biography`.
- `lang` (ru | en) — Keep one language in the response. Without it, text fields come in `_ru` and `_en` pairs. More in [Response languages](https://kinodata.space/en/docs/languages.md).
  Example: `lang=en`.
- `limit` (integer) — How many people to return, a whole number from 1 to 50.
  Default: 50. Example: `limit=10`.
- `offset` (integer) — How many people to skip, a whole number from 0.
  Default: 0.

## Response fields

- `items` (array) — The people found: the same object as on the card, without the biography.
  - `imdb_id`, `kp_id`, `tmdb_id`, `kinorium_id` (string | null) — The person’s catalog IDs. Any of them opens the [person card](https://kinodata.space/en/docs/persons/card.md).
  - `name_ru`, `name_en` (string | null) — Name in Russian and in English.
  - `name_original` (string | null) — The name in the person’s own language when it is written in neither Latin nor Cyrillic script: “宮崎 駿” for Hayao Miyazaki.
  - `birth_name` (string | null) — The name at birth when it differs from the known one: “Christopher Edward Nolan”.
  - `birth_year`, `death_year` (integer | null) — Years of birth and death. `death_year` is `null` if the person is alive or the year is unknown.
  - `birth_date`, `death_date` (string | null) — Dates of birth and death, as precise as the sources know them: `1961-10-21`, `1961-10` or `1961`. When sources agree, the more precise date wins; when they contradict, Kinopoisk wins, then Kinorium, then TMDB.
  - `age` (integer | null) — Age today, or at death. Only when the birth date is known to the day, and for those who have died, the death date too.
  - `zodiac` (object | null) — Zodiac sign: a `slug` from the `zodiac_signs` set in `/enums`, with the labels `label_ru` and `label_en`. Only with an exact date of birth.
  - `gender` (enum | null) — Gender: `male` or `female`.
  - `birthplace_ru`, `birthplace_en` (string | null) — Place of birth. The Russian one is from Kinopoisk or Kinorium (“Лондон, Англия, Великобритания”), the English one from TMDB (“Westminster, London, England, UK”).
  - `deathplace_ru`, `deathplace_en` (string | null) — Place of death.
  - `height_cm` (integer | null) — Height in centimetres.
  - `nationality` (array) — Citizenship: `code` (ISO 3166-1), `name_ru`, `name_en`, like a title’s countries.
  - `photo_url` (string | null) — The main portrait, always one of `photos_by_source`: the first there is, in the order TMDB, Kinorium, Kinopoisk. TMDB has the largest pictures, Kinorium’s are 300 px, Kinopoisk’s 360 px.
  - `photos_by_source` (object) — Each source’s photo: `kp`, `tmdb`, `kinorium`. TMDB pictures come in their original size on the card and 185 px wide in lists (search, cast): `/t/p/w185/`. For another size, replace that part of the link: `w45`, `w185`, `h632`, `original`.
  - `professions` (array) — Professions as the sources list them, values from the `credit_roles` set in `/enums`. How many titles each role really has is in `roles` on the card.
  - `career_start`, `career_end` (integer | null) — Years of the first and the latest work, as Kinopoisk counts them. While the career goes on (the person is alive and the latest work is this year, last year or announced), `career_end` is `null`. For people who have died, `career_end` is no later than the year of death: posthumous releases and archive footage don’t extend a career.
  - `genres` (array) — The person’s main genres: `slug`, `name_ru`, `name_en`, like a title’s genres.
  - `popularity` (number | null) — Popularity on TMDB: it rises as people view and search for the person more. The scale is open-ended, so compare people with each other rather than with a threshold.
  - `also_known_as` (array) — Other names and spellings: “Chris Nolan”, “Sir Christopher Nolan”.
  - `tagline_ru`, `tagline_en` (string | null) — Who this is, in one sentence. Russian only for now.
  - `links` (object) — Every link to the person elsewhere, each a URL. Social networks under keys like `x`, `instagram`, `facebook`, `vk`, `telegram`, `youtube`, `tiktok`; `website` is their own site; `wikipedia_ru` and `wikipedia_en` are the Wikipedia articles; `wikidata` is the Wikidata page (the ID is its last part, `Q38111`). An empty object when there are none.
  - `education` (array) — Schools: `title`, a `type` from the `education_types` set in `/enums` (`school`, `high_school`, `college`, `university`; `null` when the source names the type otherwise) with the labels `label_ru` and `label_en`, `note`, `year`. In search, it comes only with `fields`.
  - `biography_ru`, `biography_en` (string | null) — Biography. The English one comes from TMDB, the Russian one from Kinorium. In search, it comes only with `fields`.
- `total` (null) — Search doesn’t count the total number of matches. Page by `has_more`.
- `limit`, `offset` (integer) — Page size and offset.
- `has_more` (boolean) — Whether there is a next page.

## Errors
